Walled Lake Amusement Park Coaster

The wooden roller coaster at Walled Lake Amusement Park

Vintage amusement park entrance with cars

The wooden roller coaster at Walled Lake Amusement Park towers over the entrance as cars pull in and a “Free Parking” sign points the way. This park (also called Walled Lake Park) became a big summer draw for metro Detroit, especially after the Flying Dragon coaster debuted in 1929.

The photo isn’t dated, but the scene captures the era when a day at the lake meant rides, boardwalk energy and a line at the gate. The park eventually shut down in 1968, but the memories stuck.

Do you remember riding the Flying Dragon — or hearing stories about it?
