The Old Chicago Road’s Covered Bridge Over the St. Joe River – Mottville, Michigan

The Old Chicago Road covered bridge over the St. Joseph River in Mottville, Michigan.

Sepia postcard of a rural dirt road curving into a covered wooden bridge, with a small house on the left and large trees around the river crossing.

A covered bridge on the Old Chicago Road spans the St. Joseph River at Mottville, Mich., in this real-photo postcard view. A farmhouse sits close to the approach, and the road bends into the dark tunnel of the bridge.

This crossing was part of the Detroit-to-Chicago travel corridor that later became U.S. 12. Local history says an earlier covered Burr arch truss bridge was built here in 1867, before later bridges replaced it.
