BAD AXE — Issued by the Huron County Health Department at 9:00 a.m. on June 18, 2025.

The third week of Huron County beach testing found that all 13 monitored public beaches met state safety standards for E. coli levels. According to the results from samples collected June 17, each site showed low bacterial counts well within Michigan’s public health threshold of 300 E. coli colonies per 100 milliliters.

Tip MacGuire, Environmental Health Director for the county, confirmed the results in a notice distributed to bathing beach operators and public stakeholders.

Week 3 E. Coli Results for Public Beaches in Huron County

Each site was sampled at three points, with a composite sample used for reporting. Here are the official results for Week 3 of Huron County beach testing:

  • Bird Creek (County Park) – 0 colonies
  • Caseville (County Park) – 0 colonies
  • Harbor Beach (City Park) – 1 colony
  • Jenks (Park) – 0 colonies
  • McGraw (County Park) – 0 colonies
  • Oak Beach (County Park) – 0 colonies
  • Philp (County Park) – 2 colonies

  • Sleeper (State Park) – 0 colonies
  • Thompson (Park) – 0 colonies
  • Veteran’s (Village Park) – 2 colonies
  • Wagener (County Park) – 3 colonies

The highest value recorded was just 3 colonies per 100 mL, significantly below the limit that would require public health action.

Weekly Sampling Program Ensures Public Safety in Michigan’s Thumb

The testing is conducted under Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) protocols. Samples are drawn in water between three to six feet deep and composited into a single value for each beach.

MacGuire emphasized the role of the program in protecting both residents and seasonal visitors to Huron County. Weekly results are distributed directly to beach operators and are available upon request from the health department.
