HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — In a major announcement with wide-ranging economic and national defense implications, Governor Gretchen Whitmer confirmed that Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County will be the new home to approximately 20 F-15EX fighter aircraft, securing the future of the installation and Michigan’s role in U.S. military strategy, particularly through the Michigan F-15EX mission.

The decision follows years of bipartisan advocacy, involving local, state, and federal leaders, and comes just in time to replace the aging A-10 Thunderbolt II mission that had been slated for retirement without a replacement. Without this new assignment, Selfridge stood to lose an estimated $30 million in annual wages and hundreds of jobs tied to defense operations. The Michigan F-15EX mission is a pivotal development that enhances the state’s defense profile and job security for the community.

Whitmer Applauds ‘Game-Changing’ Win for Michigan and National Security

Calling the announcement a “game-changing” outcome, Gov. Whitmer highlighted the long-term benefits for Michigan’s $30 billion defense industry, which supports roughly 166,000 jobs across the state. “This is a huge, bipartisan win for Michigan, decades in the making, that will grow our economy and make our country safer,” said Whitmer. “Because of our tireless work with partners on the ground in Macomb County and on both sides of the aisle, the future of Selfridge is bright, lasting, and secure.”

Selfridge will receive the aircraft starting in FY2028, with the fighter mission additive to already scheduled KC-46A refueling tankers that are being stationed at the base. This dual mission strengthens Selfridge’s strategic profile and ensures its viability in future military planning.

Macomb County and State Leaders Celebrate Economic, Strategic Impact

The announcement drew praise from officials across the political spectrum, who cited both the economic and national security benefits:

  • Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II called it a “historic announcement” that will boost jobs and ensure the base thrives.
  • Maj. Gen. Paul D. Rogers, Michigan’s Adjutant General, said the F-15EX mission proves Michigan remains a national defense leader.
  • Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel credited the work of Gov. Whitmer, President Trump, and bipartisan advocates in securing Selfridge’s future.
  • State Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), who represents the base, noted the years of advocacy and funding he and other lawmakers pushed through to ready the base.
  • Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller praised the mission as “transformational” and noted Selfridge’s strategic importance on the northern U.S. border.

Decades of Advocacy Yield Results

The announcement caps off more than five years of sustained advocacy from Whitmer and Michigan officials, including:

  • Letters and meetings with Secretaries of Defense and Air Force
  • Multiple budget allocations, including $15 million in 2024 and $26 million in 2025 for infrastructure
  • High-profile visits, including groundbreakings for fighter-ready hangars
  • Bipartisan collaboration, including discussions with President Trump at the White House in March and April 2025

These efforts reflect a long-term strategy to keep Selfridge at the center of Michigan’s growing aerospace and defense innovation ecosystem.

What the F-15EX Mission Means for Michigan

The F-15EX is a modernized, multi-role fighter jet designed to complement more advanced aircraft like the F-35. Its stationing at Selfridge means:

  • Retention and expansion of jobs for airmen, civilian staff, and contractors
  • Increased local investment in military and tech infrastructure
  • Sustained economic impact for over 5,000 personnel and their families
  • Reinforcement of Selfridge’s value in defending U.S. airspace and supporting NATO missions

Selfridge’s Legacy and Future in Michigan Defense

Founded over a century ago, Selfridge remains one of Michigan’s most important military hubs. With units from every U.S. Armed Service except Space Force and active homeland security operations, it contributes more than $850 million to Michigan’s economy annually. The base also supports other installations like Camp Grayling, the Detroit Arsenal, and Battle Creek ANG Base, forming the backbone of the state’s military presence.

Officials say the F-15EX assignment cements Selfridge’s position for future Department of Defense missions.
