Apple announces a $500 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing, AI, and R&D, including a new academy in Detroit to train future workers.
Apple’s Historic Investment to Boost U.S. Manufacturing and AI

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA – Tech giant Apple is making its largest-ever investment in the U.S., pledging more than $500 billion over the next four years. The initiative will expand manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), and research and development (R&D), creating thousands of jobs across the country, including a major skills development center in Detroit, Michigan.
The announcement, made by Apple CEO Tim Cook, reaffirms the company’s commitment to domestic technology production and innovation. “We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we’re proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments,” Cook said. The investment will see Apple doubling its U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Fund and developing new technologies in partnership with suppliers in multiple states.
Detroit to Host New Apple Manufacturing Academy

Michigan will play a critical role in Apple’s expansion with the launch of the Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit. The academy will offer free in-person and online courses designed to train workers in AI-driven manufacturing and smart production techniques. In collaboration with Michigan State University, Apple engineers will guide small and mid-sized businesses in adopting advanced manufacturing practices.
The program will include courses on project management, AI integration, and supply chain optimization, helping Michigan businesses modernize their operations. This initiative builds on Apple’s ongoing education partnerships, including support for youth organizations such as 4-H and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Expansion Includes Major Manufacturing and R&D Growth
Apple’s $500 billion commitment will also drive the expansion of R&D hubs nationwide, with a focus on AI, software development, and silicon engineering. The company plans to hire 20,000 new employees, primarily in engineering and machine learning.
A major part of Apple’s investment includes producing advanced silicon chips at TSMC’s Fab 21 facility in Arizona, where Apple remains the largest customer. This development follows Apple’s long-term goal of domestic semiconductor production, reducing reliance on overseas manufacturers.
New Houston Facility to Manufacture AI-Powered Servers
In addition to Michigan’s new academy, Apple will open a 250,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas. This site will produce AI-powered servers supporting Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, a high-security AI cloud infrastructure. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and reduce Apple’s data center energy consumption, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Apple’s North Carolina, Iowa, Oregon, Arizona, and Nevada data centers will also see expanded capacity, ensuring smooth deployment of its AI-driven services.
Apple’s Economic Impact on Michigan and Beyond
With over 2.9 million jobs already supported by Apple’s U.S. investments, Michigan stands to benefit significantly from this expansion. The Detroit academy will prepare thousands of workers for high-tech manufacturing jobs, reinforcing the state’s status as an industrial powerhouse.
Apple has also paid over $75 billion in U.S. taxes over the past five years, further solidifying its economic footprint. The company’s latest investment ensures continued job growth and technological advancements in Michigan and across the nation.
