Suspicious Device Found on Huron Line Road Prompts Bomb Squad Call
AUSTIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — On the morning of June 9, troopers from the Michigan State Police Caro Post responded to a report of a potential explosive device discovered in a ditch near Huron Line Road, located between Bad Axe Road and Wheeler Road in rural Sanilac County.
The call came in shortly before 9 a.m. after a local resident spotted what appeared to be an old, rusted bomb-like object partially buried in tall grass near a tree. Michigan State Police immediately secured the area and summoned the MSP Bomb Squad.
According to an official update shared by the department, the bomb squad x-rayed the object and determined that it was inert. The device turned out to be a military flare light, not an active explosive.

While the device did not pose a threat, its presence in a roadside ditch has raised questions. The Michigan State Police noted that it remains unknown how the item arrived at the location, and no immediate explanation has been provided.
Old military ordnance is occasionally found across Michigan, particularly in rural areas with military training history or during excavation and land clearing projects. Authorities advised the public to never handle suspicious items and instead report them immediately to law enforcement.
Bomb Squad Units Trained for Rare, Yet Serious Incidents

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, headquartered in Lansing with regional teams throughout the state, is specially trained and equipped to safely respond to calls involving suspicious packages, explosive devices, and hazardous materials. Their protocols include remote examination and detonation of dangerous items, if necessary.
Though rare, similar incidents have occurred across Michigan over the years, typically involving World War II-era ordnance, military souvenirs, or discarded training equipment.
Michigan Residents Urged to Exercise Caution with Found Items
Authorities again stressed that any object resembling a bomb or shell should be treated as dangerous until proven otherwise. In this case, the swift response by state troopers and the bomb squad ensured public safety.
No evacuations were necessary, and there were no injuries or damages reported. The item was safely removed from the scene.
The Michigan State Police have not announced any further investigation, and the object will likely be destroyed or archived, depending on its condition and classification.
