CAN Council’s GolfSit fundraiser tees off again in Bad Axe to raise funds for critical child abuse prevention and advocacy programs in Huron County.
CAN Council GolfSit Fundraiser Tees Off for a Cause

BAD AXE, MI – The CAN Council GolfSit fundraiser is returning for another year on June 25 at Verona Hills Golf Club, bringing with it not just golf, but a clear mission: raising support for child abuse prevention services across Huron County. Organized by the CAN Council and presented by Thumb Bank & Trust, the event is one of the nonprofit’s cornerstone fundraisers, supporting critical intervention and advocacy programs that aid Michigan’s most vulnerable children.
The annual event combines community fun with a serious cause. Whether participants are swinging clubs, bidding in the silent auction, or just enjoying lunch during the 19th Hole Celebration, every contribution directly supports children and families affected by abuse and neglect.
CAN Council GolfSit Fundraiser Builds on Decades of Advocacy
Founded in 1979, the CAN Council has built a reputation across Arenac, Bay, Huron, and Saginaw counties for its nationally accredited programs that help prevent child abuse and neglect. The GolfSit fundraiser serves as a significant source of funding for these initiatives, especially in Huron County, where rural communities often face resource limitations.
“This isn’t just another charity golf event,” said Heather Fisher, President/CEO of CAN Council. “Every dollar raised translates to critical services—home visits, forensic interviews, family support. That impact is felt immediately and right here in our communities.”
Thumb Bank & Trust Deepens Its Role in Huron County Advocacy
Thumb Bank & Trust is again stepping up as the presenting sponsor, underscoring its longstanding commitment to community-based programs in Michigan’s Thumb. “GolfSit is a meaningful way to rally around local families,” said Heather Drabek, Senior VP at the bank. “It’s about investing in a safer future for Huron County’s children.”
Their support helps cover operational costs so that more funds can be funneled directly into programming, advocacy, and family support services.
New Ways to Participate in 2025’s CAN Council GolfSit Event
This year’s event features an open-to-the-public silent auction, available both in-person and online at golfsit.cbo.io. Attendees not playing golf can still join in at the “19th Hole Celebration” at 2:30 p.m., catered by Café 53. Entry is just $25, which includes lunch, raffles, and a chance to support the auction.
Spots are limited, and early registration is encouraged. Participants and donors can also sponsor holes or contribute to the silent auction. The council is accepting item donations and team registrations via jscharlow@cancouncil.org or by calling (989) 623-0257.
Michigan’s Rural Communities Face Unique Child Advocacy Challenges
Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reports that child abuse and neglect rates are consistently higher in rural counties, where families may face geographic isolation and reduced access to healthcare and social services.
According to MDHHS, “Building protective factors such as family resilience and social connections is essential to preventing child abuse and neglect.” In areas like Huron County, nonprofits such as the CAN Council often become the primary lifeline for vulnerable families.¹
By supporting events like GolfSit, the community invests in a more stable and supported future for children throughout Michigan’s Thumb.
