Community questions mount as allegations of intentional sinking of the Au Sable River Queen go uninvestigated, leaving a Michigan icon in limbo.

Locals Say Iconic Riverboat’s Sinking May Be Criminal

Oscoda, Mi – The sinking of the AuSable River Queen, a historic paddlewheel boat docked at the Foote Site Park located west of Oscoda, Michigan, has ignited a storm of public concern and controversy. Once a staple of tourism along the Au Sable River, the vessel now sits damaged, prompting accusations of intentional sabotage and frustration over the lack of law enforcement response.

The boat’s longtime operator, Laurie Rice Bell, posted on Facebook that there was “no visible hull damage” and dismissed ice damage as a factor. “We know there were no visible holes on the hull and the ice was not a factor,” she wrote. She also claimed that the sinking looked “suspicious”. She has made multiple attempts to involve local authorities, but they were brushed off. “He said we don’t want to get involved,” Bell recounted, referring to a township police officer.

Michigan Residents Voice Support — and Skepticism — Online

The incident has become a flashpoint on social media. Hundreds of comments poured in following Bell’s original post, revealing a community divided between skepticism and sympathy.

Supporters expressed outrage over what they believe is an intentional act of destruction. “This isn’t just a boat. It’s a piece of our town,” wrote one commenter. Others suggested Bell reach out to the EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, or State Police, citing environmental and legal concerns due to potential fuel leakage into the river.

Conversely, critics questioned the condition of the vessel prior to the incident. “It decayed from years of neglect,” noted one resident. Others called for the boat’s removal to restore public beach access and end what they describe as a prolonged nuisance.

Environmental and Legal Ramifications Under Scrutiny

If the claims of sabotage and environmental damage hold merit, several state and federal laws may be at play. According to an AI legal analysis posted in the comments, possible violations include:

  • Clean Water Act: Prohibits the release of pollutants into navigable waters.
  • Oil Pollution Act: Addresses liability for oil spills in U.S. waters.
  • Criminal Mischief or Arson: If the boat was deliberately damaged, Michigan state law classifies it as a felony depending on property value.
  • State Environmental Statutes: Illegal discharge or hazardous waste mismanagement.

Residents also raised the issue of insurance coverage. Bell has not publicly disclosed whether a claim has been filed or denied, prompting questions about accountability and potential civil litigation.

Township and Beach Access Add Fuel to the Fire

Adding to the tension are allegations that Oscoda Township may have an interest in the property where the boat was docked. Bell suggested the township might want to replace the Queen with new docks, although she acknowledged no official plan has been presented.

According to follow-up comments on the post, the township has reportedly begun steps to have the boat removed, noting that the boat’s owners refused assistance and misrepresented the situation on social media. “It’s over,” one resident wrote in a post. The Queen will be removed… and they’ll be billed for it.”

We talked with Ms. Bell, and she indicated that appointments have been set up with local authorities for further investigation. “I have also contacted the Michigan State Police and am hopeful to get some assistance.”

Public Petition Calls for River Queen’s Return to Her Home Dock

A growing number of Oscoda residents and supporters are rallying behind a public petition on Change.org, calling for the AuSable River Queen to be allowed to return to her longstanding berth along the Au Sable River.

Launched by the vessel’s current caretaker, the Allow the AuSable River Queen to Return Home petition frames the issue not merely as a business dispute but as a threat to the town’s identity. “For sixty years, the AuSable River Queen, a double-decker red, white, and blue boat, has been a cherished icon in the town of Oscoda,” the petition reads. It emphasizes the boat’s deep roots in the community and its value as a local cultural and economic asset.

The campaign argues that denying the River Queen her traditional operating location threatens to sever an important link to Oscoda’s past and risks undermining a tourism draw that has supported area businesses for generations. “The AuSable River Queen not only belongs to Oscoda; she embodies the spirit and history of our town,” the petition states.

Supporters are asking township officials and stakeholders to allow the vessel to remain in her historical location following repairs or relocation efforts. The petition has begun circulating widely on local social media, with many residents expressing concern that the boat’s removal could result in permanent loss.

As of this writing, the petition remains active and continues to gather signatures.
