While the path of totality, the area where the eclipse is fully visible will only graze the southeastern-most corner of Michigan, specifically Monroe County, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that several state parks and game areas will offer prime spots for viewing this rare event, albeit as a deep partial eclipse.

Prime Viewing Locations in Michigan State Parks

According to NASA’s Eclipse Explorer, an interactive map that helps predict coverage, these three Michigan State Parks or Game Areas will experience a deep solar eclipse on April 8th.

Sterling State Park

Sterling State Park in Monroe is positioned as one of the premier viewing locations, with an anticipated 99.8% coverage of the sun. The park is hosting a viewing party from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., where attendees can enjoy food trailers, interpretive programs, and a unique touch-the-truck display. Complimentary solar eclipse glasses will be provided by the Monroe County Convention & Tourism Bureau, Monroe County Museum, and the DNR, while supplies last.

Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Lake Hudson Recreation Area, known as a stargazing haven and one of Michigan’s six designated dark sky preserves, is also hosting a viewing event. The area is expected to experience a 99.3% eclipse and will provide free solar eclipse glasses to visitors in the beach parking lot, courtesy of Visit Lenawee.

Erie State Game Area

Erie State Game Area is set to witness a near-perfect eclipse with 99.98% coverage. A viewing event organized in partnership with the Monroe County Convention and Tourism Bureau will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on the Dusseau Tract. Attendees should note that parking is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis along the grass shoulder of Bay Creek Road.

Petersburg State Game Area

The Petersburg State Game Area in Michigan is popular for outdoor enthusiasts. It spans over 3,000 acres, offering a variety of recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, and bird watching. At 3:13 p.m. on April 8th, the Petersburg State Game Area on Teal Road will have an estimated 99.8% coverage. There are several small roadside parking lots on Teal and Lulu Roads.

Safety First

The DNR and eclipse experts stress the importance of never looking directly at the sun, even during a partial eclipse, without proper eye protection. Only ISO-certified eclipse glasses or solar viewers should be used to watch this awe-inspiring event safely.
