Consumers Energy Storm Response Sees Fast, Focused Restoration Effort

Power Outage Restoration

Consumers Energy confirmed Saturday that more than 100,000 customers have had power restored after violent thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes swept through Michigan overnight on May 16. Despite additional outages caused by ongoing weather events, the utility expects clear conditions to help drive power outage restoration progress in the coming hours.

The storms that hit Michigan on May 16 were not just typical thunderstorms; they were part of a severe weather system that included damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes. Weather experts reported wind gusts exceeding 75 mph in some areas, causing extensive tree damage and downed power lines. Many homes experienced significant damage, with some families displaced due to the destruction of their properties. As restoration efforts continue, local officials are assessing the full impact of the storm on the community’s infrastructure, including roads, schools, and public services.

Throughout the restoration process, Consumers Energy has implemented a robust communication strategy to keep customers informed. Regular updates are provided via social media, press releases, and the company’s website. Customers are encouraged to sign up for text alerts and utilize the company’s mobile app for real-time updates on restoration progress and safety tips. This proactive communication is essential, as it helps alleviate customer concerns during a time of uncertainty.

“We won’t stop until the job is finished,” said Sri Maddipati, one of the utility’s Officers in Charge for restoration. Crews worked overnight in difficult conditions and will continue throughout Saturday as restoration efforts shift into high gear.

Out-of-State Reinforcements Join Local Crews in West Michigan

In addition to the local crews, Consumers Energy has partnered with several organizations and utility companies from neighboring states. This collaboration enables a more robust response to the outages, as specialized crews bring unique expertise in handling storm damage. The mutual aid agreements allow for a more extensive distribution of resources, ensuring that all affected areas receive the attention they need as quickly as possible.

To tackle the widespread damage, Consumers Energy deployed 660 crews, including help from contractors in eight states, some as far away as Louisiana. These reinforcements are focusing on heavily hit communities like Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon.

In light of the storm, Consumers Energy has reminded customers of the importance of having an emergency plan in place. This includes knowing how to safely use generators, maintaining a supply of non-perishable food, and ensuring that flashlights and batteries are readily available. Residents are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with local emergency services and resources, which can provide assistance during power outages and other emergencies.

As Michiganders navigate the recovery process, community support has become increasingly important. Local organizations and volunteer groups are stepping up to assist those in need, whether through providing meals, housing support, or helping with cleanup efforts. This spirit of resilience and collaboration exemplifies the strength of Michigan communities in the face of adversity.

“The damage created by this storm was significant, and our lineworkers are giving their all,” said Maddipati. “We are deeply grateful for our customers’ patience.”

The utility noted that severe wind and lightning resulted in widespread outages from Kalamazoo and other west Michigan counties to Lansing and Saginaw—an area that includes both urban and rural service zones.

Consumers Urges Caution Near Downed Power Lines

Public safety remains a top priority as crews continue working in active restoration zones. Maddipati stressed that all residents must avoid any downed power lines, staying at least 25 feet away.

Consumers Energy provided the following safety reminders:

  • Report downed wires by calling 911 first, then Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050
  • Avoid generator use in enclosed spaces due to carbon monoxide risks
  • Consumers crews may trim or remove trees for power restoration, but debris removal is the property owner’s responsibility
  • Damage to the mast or cable connecting a structure to the grid must be fixed by a licensed electrician before reconnection

Michigan’s Largest Utility Company Leads Multi-County Effort

As part of their ongoing commitment to improving service reliability, Consumers Energy has also announced plans to invest in infrastructure upgrades in response to the storm’s damage. This includes reinforcing power lines and increasing tree trimming operations to reduce the risk of outages in future storms. The utility company is actively seeking feedback from customers on their experiences during the outage to identify areas for improvement and enhance response strategies moving forward.

In addition to tracking outages through the Consumers Energy website and mobile app, customers are advised to stay connected through social media channels. Updates and safety information are frequently posted, allowing residents to remain informed about the situation in their area. Engaging with the community online can also provide insight into shared experiences and coping strategies during outages.

With more than 6.8 million customers in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties, Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider. The company continues to emphasize its core mission—delivering reliable, clean, and affordable energy around the clock.

Customers are encouraged to track power outages using the Consumers Energy Outage Map or by downloading the Consumers Energy mobile app.
