Congresswoman McDonald Rivet leads effort to secure federal funds for critical water infrastructure upgrades across five communities
Mid-Michigan safe drinking water projects gain new momentum as Congresswoman McDonald Rivet pushes for FY2026 federal funding.
Safe Drinking Water Projects in Mid-Michigan Top Budget Priorities
Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) has announced a series of federal funding requests aimed at improving access to safe, clean drinking water in several mid-Michigan communities. The requests, submitted under the Community Project Funding Initiative, are designed to protect public health, reduce financial burdens on small communities, and attract future economic investment.
“Safe, reliable drinking water should be available to everyone, no matter where they live,” said McDonald Rivet. Her initiative targets communities across Genesee, Bay, Saginaw, and Midland counties and includes support for public schools, senior residents, and regional hospitals.
Fenton Area Water Line Expansion Would Benefit Four School Buildings
A major request involves Charter Township of Fenton, City of Linden, and Mundy Township, which would receive new water lines to replace aging infrastructure and expand public access to safe drinking water. The upgrade is expected to serve thousands of residents and boost local economic development.
Fenton Township Supervisor Vince Lorraine stated, “This funding would allow us to install new water lines to safely deliver reliable drinking water to thousands of residents and four local schools.”
Linden Looks to Stabilize Utility Rates and Replace Aging Infrastructure
The City of Linden is requesting funds to modernize its water system, comply with federal safety standards, and maintain equitable access for senior residents and families with fixed incomes.
“This funding is essential to Linden’s water system,” said Ellen Glass, Linden City Manager. She emphasized the project’s role in keeping rates stable for vulnerable households.
Bangor Township Seeks to Eliminate Lead Pipes and Create Jobs
Another priority is replacing lead and cast iron water lines in Bangor Township, where outdated systems pose a health hazard. The township also expects job creation and business attraction from the project.
“These funds would allow us to replace lead water lines and protect the people of beautiful Bangor Township from harmful chemicals,” said Supervisor Glenn Rowley, noting the presence of cast iron lines from the 1940s.
City of Midland Requests Emergency Generator for Hospital Water Supply
Midland has applied for funds to install an emergency generator at the Valley Drive Pump Station, ensuring continued water service during floods and power outages. The site serves the MyMichigan Medical Center Midland hospital campus and thousands of residents.
“A permanent backup generator would give Midland residents the peace of mind,” said City Manager Brad Kaye.
Buena Vista Township to Upgrade Wastewater System for Long-Term Safety
Buena Vista Charter Township is seeking funding to update its wastewater treatment system. The project will protect water sources, support environmental sustainability, and guard against disease outbreaks.
“Buena Vista Charter Township is thankful to Representative McDonald Rivet for fighting for critical funding,” said Superintendent Torrie L. Lee.
Congressional Advocacy for Flint Registry and Regional Water Equity
In addition to the five infrastructure projects, McDonald Rivet is requesting continued $5 million funding for the Flint Registry, which tracks health outcomes for residents impacted by the water crisis. She also plays an active role on the Lead Caucus, Bipartisan PFAS Task Force, and Bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force, where she advocates for clean water standards across Michigan and the Great Lakes region.
