We commonly take a road trip throughout Michigan to explore some out-of-the-way places that we want to know more about.

At the tip of Michigan’s Thumb, Port Crescent State Park is one of six Dark Sky Preserves in Michigan. The park’s designation as a Dark Sky Preserve is another unique element. Visitors can experience this without having to drive further north or to the Upper Peninsula.

Kinde, Michigan is a slice of a true American farming community in the Thumb. The village was founded in the 1880’s and is still vibrant today
Huron City Michigan is a historic district and museum with buildings from the 1800s. The town was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The tiny town is open for tours on Friday and Saturday during July & August.
The Gamble Plantation is an obscure yet fascinating attraction showing the role Florida played in the Civil War and how slavery propped up the economy of the Confederacy.
The romanticized view of the old south belays the fact that the Gamble plantation was an economic failure.
We encountered many folks who have come up to Michigan’s Upper Thumb for their entire lives but never have seen these top ten sites. They offer a glimpse of the history and beauty of native Michigan and its Great Lakes.
