Watch this Michigan Moments episode as we travel back to downtown Elkton, Michigan, in 1940, when a single photograph captured a community on the brink of change.
One vintage photograph tells an entire story.
Parked automobiles line Main Street beneath the shade of mature trees. A Gulf gas station serves motorists arriving from the surrounding countryside. The Corner Cottage restaurant welcomes hungry customers for lunch. Just down the block, a brand-new theater is preparing to become the center of entertainment for the community.
The Star Theater officially opened on Aug. 23, 1940, giving Elkton residents a modern movie house of their own. Within weeks, owner Gav W. Ackerman sold the theater to Detroit exhibitor William J. Schulte, whose chain included theaters in Detroit and nearby Bad Axe. The change in ownership promised Elkton audiences quicker access to leading Hollywood motion pictures.
This short documentary examines what can be learned from a single image. Every storefront, parked automobile, business sign, and theater marquee provides clues about daily life in Michigan’s Thumb just before the United States entered World War II.
The photograph captures more than buildings. It preserves a moment when small-town America embraced the automobile, modern entertainment, and the optimism of a new decade.
