The Huron Milling Company, established in the late 19th century in Harbor Beach, Michigan, began as a flour mill under the name J. Jenks & Co. It processed various products, including wheat, corn starches, textile sizing, wallpaper paste, and even macaroni. Notably, it was the first facility in the United States to roll winter wheat, setting a standard for flour milling nationwide.
Over the years, the company underwent several ownership changes. In 1957, Hercules Inc. purchased the Huron Milling Company and later donated its property and facilities to the community, which contributed to the establishment of a local hospital.
In 1994, Universal Foods Corp. acquired the plant, renaming it Universal Food Red Star Specialty Products Division, and in 2000, it became Sensient Flavors. Throughout its history, the facility has been a cornerstone of Harbor Beach’s economy, providing employment opportunities and supporting community initiatives for over a century.
