Whitmer Announces Michigan Lands $22.2M Hydrogen Hub – Ushering In A Clean Energy Boom, 12,000 Jobs

Michigan leverages federal funding to spearhead a hydrogen economy, creating 12,000 jobs and advancing the MI Healthy Climate Plan.

Michigan Announces $22.2 Million Hydrogen Hub Investment

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has unveiled a transformative $22.2 million federal investment in Michigan’s clean energy future through the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2). The funding, provided by the Department of Energy (DOE) and supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will position Michigan as a leader in the emerging hydrogen economy. The initiative is expected to create 12,000 jobs and solidify Michigan’s role in clean energy innovation and manufacturing.

The MachH2 initiative will focus on key projects, including the creation of a hydrogen “Truck Stop of the Future” in Detroit, a hydrogen production facility at the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti, and the expansion of hydrogen-powered public transit in Flint. These projects will catalyze economic growth, enhance public health, and contribute to the state’s MI Healthy Climate Plan, which seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Hydrogen “Truck Stop of the Future” to Transform Detroit

One of the standout features of the MachH2 plan is the hydrogen “Truck Stop of the Future,” set to debut in Detroit. Strategically designed to support the decarbonization of traffic on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, this facility could reduce up to 8,250 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually—equivalent to planting 115,000 tree seedlings for 10 years.

The truck stop will also serve as a testbed for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles, further positioning Michigan as an ideal location for advanced mobility innovations.

Zachary Kolodin, Michigan’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, emphasized the broader impact of the project: “This initiative strengthens our manufacturing capabilities, grows our workforce, and positions the Midwest as a global leader in clean energy.”

Ypsilanti to Host Cutting-Edge Hydrogen Production Facility

At the American Center for Mobility (ACM) in Ypsilanti, a state-of-the-art hydrogen production facility will enhance on-site capabilities for advanced hydrogen research and development. As a hub for sustainable mobility technologies, ACM’s collaboration with MachH2 underscores Michigan’s commitment to pioneering a hydrogen-driven economy.

Reuben Sarkar, ACM President, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “This project not only aligns with our vision of sustainable transportation but also establishes us at the forefront of the hydrogen revolution.”

Flint Expands Leadership in Hydrogen-Powered Transit

Flint’s Mass Transportation Authority (MTA) is expanding its hydrogen production facilities and fleet of fuel-cell buses, which have already reduced the city’s diesel consumption by 99%. This initiative exemplifies Flint’s role as a national leader in hydrogen transit and sustainable public transportation.

Ed Benning, CEO of Flint MTA, lauded the partnership with MachH2: “This expansion furthers our commitment to zero-emission transit and positions Flint as a model for environmental stewardship.”

The initiative has secured $11.25 million from the Make it in Michigan Competitiveness Fund and $2.9 million in matching funds from the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Michigan’s Broader Leadership in Clean Energy

This hydrogen hub initiative is part of Michigan’s broader efforts to lead in clean energy. A recent report from Climate Power ranked Michigan first in the nation for clean energy projects fueled by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The state has attracted over $26 billion in new investments, creating thousands of manufacturing jobs and strengthening supply chains.

Phil Roos, Director of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, remarked: “MachH2 is a win for our planet, economy, and workforce. It exemplifies Michigan’s potential to lead the hydrogen revolution.”

As Michigan continues to embrace clean energy technologies, the state’s strategic investments are setting a precedent for innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.
