Cooler temps today across Michigan give way to warmer weather by Thursday. Expect rain showers Sunday as another cold front approaches the Great Lakes.

Temperatures in the 40s and 50s This Morning, but Warmer Days Ahead for Michigan

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:55 AM EDT on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

Clear Skies Today as Cooler Air Settles Over Michigan

A cooler and drier airmass has settled over Michigan today, resulting in temperatures falling into the 40s and low 50s this morning. Residents can expect mostly clear skies with some high clouds filtering in. High temperatures will reach the upper 60s, about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. The clear conditions come as a surface ridge slowly moves east, limiting warming during the day.

This tranquil weather will hold until Thursday, when warmer air arrives ahead of a weak cold front.

Thursday Brings Warmer Temperatures but Rain Expected Sunday

By Thursday, the winds shift, allowing temperatures to climb well into the 70s and possibly touch 80 degrees in some areas. While the dry spell is expected to last through Saturday, the arrival of a stronger cold front on Sunday is likely to bring rain showers back to the region.

The National Weather Service notes that while it’s still early, a vigorous upper-level trough will track across the Western Great Lakes on Sunday, increasing the chances of showers. However, the exact timing of rain may depend on how much warm air manages to cap the atmosphere ahead of the front.

Marine Advisory Issued for Northern Lake Huron

Lake Huron boaters should be cautious as southwest winds of 20-25 knots are expected by Wednesday evening. Gusts may even approach 30 knots over north-central Lake Huron, and small craft advisories will likely be in effect for Saginaw Bay. Winds over the southern Great Lakes are expected to remain below 20 knots, providing more favorable boating conditions in Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.
