Selfridge-field-1930

Airmen and a biplane at Selfridge Field near Mount Clemens, Michigan, labeled 1930.

This photo shows four uniformed airmen gathered around a biplane at Selfridge Field near Mount Clemens, Michigan, labeled 1930.

Selfridge began in 1917 on land tied to auto pioneer Henry B. Joy, and it was named for Lt. Thomas Selfridge, an early Army aviator killed in a 1908 crash during a demonstration flight. By 1930, Selfridge was a busy Army Air Corps post — and that winter, pilots launched a long cold-weather test flight from Michigan to Spokane, Washington, and back.

Do you know what aircraft model this is, or recognize any of the men in the photo?
