Harbor Beach, Michigan, circa 1905. This real photo postcard shows the town’s bustling waterfront during a period of dock expansion. A handwritten note on the reverse reads, “Postel of the dock they are making larger,” likely referring to efforts to expand shipping capacity. Visible in the photo are shoreline fish houses, moored rowboats, and the prominent breakwater pier leading to the harbor’s working docks and lighthouse. Harbor Beach was a critical stop for Great Lakes shipping, thanks in part to its deep harbor and protective breakwater—then the largest freshwater harbor refuge in the world.
