Huron Community Fair 2026 returns to Bad Axe Aug. 9-15 with livestock shows, rides, live music, ATV racing, truck races and a Saturday rodeo.
BAD AXE, Mich. — The Huron Community Fair returns to Bad Axe this weekend with something noticeably different before anyone gets near the livestock barns, midway or grandstand: the dates have moved.
The 158th fair officially runs Sunday, Aug. 9, through Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Huron County Fairgrounds. Agricultural activity begins Saturday, Aug. 8, with livestock check-ins, harness racing at 2 p.m. and a horse show at 5 p.m.
Huron Community Fair schedule shifts after a rare midway change
The change is more significant than moving a few dates on a calendar. The Huron Daily Tribune reported that this is the first time in more than 150 years that the fair dates have moved. Fair Board President Clark Brock said the previous carnival provider left, forcing the board to find another company that was available a week later.
That is the story behind the 2026 fair: one of Huron County’s oldest annual traditions had to adjust its calendar because of something as practical as midway availability.
The fair officially opens Sunday with livestock judging, harness racing, a 4-H horse show and the evening opening ceremony. The midway begins operating Tuesday.
Huron Community Fair mixes livestock work with grandstand noise
The week’s schedule keeps the agricultural side of the Huron Community Fair firmly in view. Swine, rabbit, dairy, sheep, poultry and market beef shows are scheduled throughout the week, along with Junior Livestock Association activities and auctions.
Monday brings a Bump-N-Run Derby at 6 p.m. Tuesday includes a tractor pull at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday adds a free Homegrown All-Star Country Night featuring Chase Murphy and the Backroads Band, Waylon Hanel and his band, and Randy Smaglinski.
Thursday’s schedule includes a Special Needs Kids Event from 9 a.m. to noon, followed later by an ATV/UTV race at 6:30 p.m. Friday is Kids Day, ending with the Red Neck Grain Truck Race at 7 p.m. The grandstand week closes Saturday with the Super Kicker Rodeo at 7 p.m.
Corrected midway hours and admission prices deserve a close look
Fair organizers have already issued a correction after Tuesday and Saturday carnival hours differed between the printed brochure and website. The corrected midway hours are 3-10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 2-10 p.m. Friday and noon-10 p.m. Saturday.
Daily fair admission is $5, with children 10 and younger admitted free, according to the fair schedule. A weekly admission pass is $25. Grandstand admission is $10. Carnival rides are separate.
The organizer’s updated notice lists presale carnival wristbands at $20 for one day or $80 for the entire week. Regular prices are $25 for a one-day wristband and $100 for the week.
Why Michigan county fairs still matter beyond the midway
The Huron Community Fair is part of a much larger Michigan fair system. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says Michigan’s 86 county fairs draw an estimated 4.5 million people annually.
MDARD Director Tim Boring called county fairs and expositions “cherished summer traditions that boost local commerce.” The state also treats fairs as agricultural education and infrastructure, awarding $525,000 in fair and livestock exposition grants in 2026.
That agricultural role is particularly visible in Huron County. Michigan State University Extension reported that more than 513 Huron County 4-H youths participated in the fair in 2023. The midway draws attention, but hundreds of local young people put months of work into the part of the fair that existed long before carnival wristbands did.
