Frankenmuth, MIThe Bavarian Inn Lodge is entering the final stages of its $90 million, 170,000-square-foot expansion, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for family fun in Michigan. With an opening scheduled just in time for Christmas, the expansion will introduce “Bavarian Blast,” the state’s largest indoor waterpark and family entertainment complex, to the iconic Bavarian-themed resort.

This ambitious project, spearheaded by R.C. Hendrick & Son, Inc., has been in the works for nearly two years and will add an array of exciting features that span over three football fields. Highlights include 16 waterslides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and the state’s first indoor swim-up bar. These features aim to offer something for visitors of all ages and interests.

The Bavarian Inn Lodge’s history as a family-friendly destination dates back to its opening in 1986. Since then, the resort has undergone six expansions, growing from a modest lodge to a 360-room hotel with extensive entertainment and dining options. The current expansion is the most significant in its history, transforming the venue into a regional powerhouse for recreation and relaxation.

In addition to waterpark attractions, the new development will include:

  • A three-story ropes course with a skyline feature.
  • Three climbing walls.
  • Mini-bowling alleys and laser tag.
  • A robust gaming area featuring more than 180 video and redemption games.

The expansion also incorporates elements of Frankenmuth’s Bavarian heritage, such as the ceremonial hoisting of an evergreen tree atop the roof during the recent “roof raising” event. This tradition, brought to Michigan by Bavarian settlers in 1845, symbolizes structural completion and celebrates workers’ efforts.

Expansion Unfolds Amid Ongoing Operations

Despite the massive construction effort, the lodge has continued to welcome guests with its existing amenities fully operational. This includes four pools (one for adults only), two waterslides, whirlpools, the Ratskeller Restaurant, and an ice cream and candy shop. Popular features such as indoor mini-golf and laser tag have remained unaffected, ensuring families can still enjoy the property’s hallmark attractions.

The construction hasn’t slowed the Bavarian Inn Lodge’s dedication to its high standards of guest satisfaction. Crews are on-site daily, working to meet the project’s holiday deadline, ensuring visitors will have an unforgettable experience during the festive season in Frankenmuth.

Frankenmuth and Michigan Tourism Stand to Benefit

The expanded Bavarian Inn Lodge is poised to become a major draw for tourists in Frankenmuth, already one of Michigan’s top destinations. Known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria,” the town attracts visitors with its quaint German-inspired architecture, food, and cultural experiences.

This development aligns with Michigan’s broader tourism growth strategy, enhancing the state’s reputation as a family-friendly vacation spot. By providing year-round entertainment, the new waterpark and fun center will contribute to local economic growth, supporting businesses and creating jobs in the region.

Related Developments and Future Prospects

The Bavarian Inn Lodge’s expansion reflects a growing trend of integrating heritage tourism with modern entertainment. It also demonstrates how local traditions—such as the evergreen ceremony—can be preserved while embracing innovation. The resort is expected to see a significant boost in visitation, cementing Frankenmuth’s status as a must-visit destination for Michiganders and out-of-state travelers alike.
