From Sunshine to Snow in a Few Days – Michigan’s Wild Weather Week Ahead!

Southeast Michigan weather
From National Weather Service

Mild temps through Wednesday, widespread showers Tuesday, and a potential rain-snow mix later in the week in Southeast Michigan.

Mild Start with Showers Expected, Colder Weather, and Rain-Snow Mix Possible by Midweek

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:37 AM EST on November 18, 2024.

Southeast Michigan residents can expect mild temperatures through Wednesday, with daytime highs reaching the 50s and even 60s in some southern areas on Tuesday. Widespread showers will make their return early Tuesday, as a warm front lifts through the region, marking a shift toward a breezy, colder end to the work week. A strong low-pressure system could bring a mix of rain and snow, raising concerns about midweek weather conditions.

Mild Temperatures to Continue Through Midweek

The early part of the week brings above-average temperatures to Southeast Michigan, with highs in the middle to upper 50s and some southern locales touching the low 60s by Tuesday. Plentiful sunshine today will be accompanied by light winds as surface ridging passes through the area. However, expect a rapid shift in conditions later Monday night as warm air advection ramps up, bringing widespread showers by early Tuesday morning.

Rain Expected as Warm Front Lifts Across the Region

Widespread showers are expected to develop as a warm front lifts into the area late Monday night into early Tuesday. The National Weather Service predicts 60-80% rain chances throughout Tuesday, primarily driven by high saturation levels in the lower atmosphere. Although the system lacks strong synoptic forcing, light to moderate rain or even drizzle is possible.

Colder, Breezy Weather with Rain and Snow Possible by Late Week

A shift to colder and unsettled weather is likely as a developing low-pressure system moves into the Great Lakes midweek. There remains high variance in potential outcomes, including the possibility of rain changing to snow across parts of Southeast Michigan. The forecast remains uncertain, but lake-enhanced precipitation and colder air could lead to a rain/snow mix Wednesday night into Thursday. Accumulations, if any, are expected to be light, though monitoring is advised for any changes.

Marine Conditions and Strong Winds to Develop

Mariners should be prepared for changing wind conditions. A low-pressure system moving through Minnesota will strengthen the pressure gradient over the Great Lakes, leading to easterly winds of 20-25 knots and potential gusts around 30 knots over Lake Huron. Small Craft Advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
