Consumers Energy Clears 8,000 Miles of Trees to Enhance Power Grid

JACKSON, Mich. — Consumers Energy is ramping up its efforts to reduce power outages by clearing trees along more than 8,000 miles of power lines in 2025, an increase of 1,000 miles from the previous year.

The initiative, part of the company’s Reliability Roadmap, represents a significant investment in infrastructure resilience, with each mile cleared costing approximately $15,000. The goal is to safeguard electrical equipment and ensure a more reliable energy system for homes and businesses statewide.

“Line clearing is one of the most effective ways we can improve reliability for our customers,” said Chris Laird, Vice President of Electric Operations at Consumers Energy. “We know that Michigan’s weather can be unpredictable, but by keeping power lines clear, we are reducing the risk of outages and helping keep the lights on for the people we serve.”

Addressing the Leading Cause of Power Outages

Tree-related damage accounts for 40% of power outages in Michigan, making vegetation management a priority for the state’s largest energy provider. By trimming and removing hazardous limbs, Consumers Energy is preventing power disruptions before they occur.

As part of this initiative, the company collaborates with certified arborists to conduct line clearing in an environmentally responsible manner. Crews focus on high-priority areas where trees and vegetation most frequently cause outages while also maintaining a commitment to community engagement.

“As an arborist, I understand the importance of balancing tree health with safety and reliability,” said Sara Stewart, Senior Manager of Forestry at Consumers Energy. “Line clearing and responsible vegetation management not only help prevent power outages but also promote healthier, more resilient trees in our communities. It’s a win-win—we’re keeping the lights on while ensuring trees continue to leave a lasting impact.”

Measurable Impact on Power Reliability

Since expanding its enhanced line clearing program, Consumers Energy has seen significant improvements in service reliability, with fewer and shorter outages reported in areas where trees have been cleared. The Reliability Roadmap extends beyond vegetation management to include upgrades in equipment, technology, and response strategies.

The results are clear:

  • Customers experienced an average of 21 fewer outage minutes compared to last year.
  • Over 93% of outages were restored in less than 24 hours.

“By staying proactive, we’re reducing outages, improving response times, and making sure our customers experience fewer and shorter disruptions,” Laird added. “Whether it’s the heat of summer or the middle of winter, Consumers Energy crews are out making sure trees and power lines can safely coexist.”
