DIA Inside|Out Program – A Symphony of Art and Nature at Huron County Nature Center

The Detroit Institute of Arts and its Community Engagement Drive

Port Austin, Michigan – For over a decade, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has been making waves with its innovative DIA Inside|Out Program. A compelling blend of art, culture, and community engagement, this initiative sees the DIA collaborating with various outdoor venues throughout the metro Detroit tri-county region, and even venturing beyond into select outstate venues.

One such location is the Huron County Nature Center, a lush expanse of verdant Michigan forest run entirely by volunteers. Since its inception 14 years ago, the DIA’s Inside|Out Program has worked with more than 100 communities, sparking joy and engagement with tens of thousands of residents through art.

In the heart of Huron County Nature Center, you’ll find the visitors’ center surrounded by ten brilliant art installations. These artworks, reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection, were previously displayed in the Village of Port Austin as part of the Port Austin Artist in Residency Program.

The ten-piece collection includes a diverse array of works, from the kinetic energy of Reginald Marsh’s “Savoy Ballroom,” to the serene tranquility of Claude Monet’s “Round Flower Garden.” Kwesi Owusu Ankomah’s abstract “Movement #27” lives in harmony with Frederic Edwin Church’s romantic “Cotopaxi” landscape, while the historical significance of the “Ishtar Gate, Dragon of Marduk,” a piece of Neo-Babylonian art, provides a touch of ancient allure.

Engaging with Nature and Art

The Huron County Nature Center has a dual mission: to conserve Michigan’s forests and to make these green spaces available for public enjoyment. By adding the artwork from DIA’s Inside|Out Program, an additional layer of fascination has been added to the visitor’s center.

After immersing in the art, guests are encouraged to explore the center’s two trail systems, covering nearly six miles, including a paved trail for those who prefer an easier walk.
