Huron County Sheriff Gives Updates on Two Fatal Crashes

We received the following update regarding two separate fatal auto crashes in Huron County. This is from a press release from the Huron County Sheriffs’ office a few minutes ago:

Driver Succumbs to Injuries from June 27th Crash in Colfax Township.

We were notified yesterday (8th) afternoon that a driver in a two-vehicle personal injury crash on June 27th, 2022, in Colfax Twp., died yesterday afternoon while in surgery due to injuries. Janet K. Hoyt, age 62, of Snover, was the sole occupant of a 2006 Ford Escape at 06:49 that morning when she attempted to turn into a private driveway on M-53 (S. Van Dyke), near Thomas Road.

Ms. Hoyt was taken to McLaren Thumb Hospital by Central Huron Ambulance, then transferred to an out-of-county hospital with serious injuries. The truck driver reported he wasn’t injured. However, early morning bright sunlight may have been a factor in Ms. Hoyt’s not seeing the truck.

Other agencies responding that morning were the Bad Axe Police, the Bad Axe Fire Department, and the Michigan State Police.

Fatal Crash in Sheman Township Friday, July 8th

Sheriff Hanson also reported that his Department responded to M 25 (Lakeshore Rd.), south of Atwater Road in Sherman Twp., which was the scene of another fatal crash. Accident investigators are still piecing it together but a northbound 2012 Buick Enclave, occupied by only the driver, impacted with the side of a 99 Saturn, occupied by a driver and passenger. This crash resulted in the driver being fatally injured and the passenger seriously injured. The Enclave driver complained of minor injuries. The Saturn passenger was taken to the Harbor Beach Hospital by Eastern Huron Ambulance Service and flown to an out-of-county hospital for specialized treatment.

This incident occurred on a curved roadway, and it is unclear at this point whether the Saturn had just pulled onto the road or attempted to make a U-turn. There were also witnesses to parts of the incident but not all of it. This investigation is continuing. The victim’s and other vehicle drivers’ information will not be released until later this afternoon to allow more time for notification to family and friends.

Also assisting at this scene were the Harbor Beach Police and the Sherman Township Fire Department.
