Kayaking the Turnip Rock Caves
Kayaking to Turnip Rock and its nearby caves in Lake Huron is one of Michigan’s most scenic paddling experiences. The seven-mile round-trip route from Port Austin follows the shoreline, passing limestone cliffs and lush forests before reaching the iconic rock formation. Turnip Rock, shaped by centuries of erosion, rises from the water with its tree-covered top, making it a striking natural landmark. Just beyond, paddlers can explore sea caves carved into the limestone, depending on water levels. The clear, shallow waters surrounding the area enhance the experience, offering stunning views beneath the surface.
While the journey is suitable for beginners on calm days, Lake Huron’s winds and waves can make the return trip challenging. Mornings generally offer the best conditions, with smoother water and fewer crowds. Turnip Rock is located on private property, so landing is not allowed, but paddlers can circle around for photos and exploration. Safety is key—kayakers should check the weather forecast, wear life jackets, and bring essential gear. This adventure is a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts, providing a unique glimpse into Michigan’s natural beauty from the water.
