Port Huron’s Blue Water Bridge tolls see its first hike in over a decade as MDOT aims to cover rising costs and infrastructure improvements.

Eastbound Blue Water Bridge Toll Hike Starts Dec. 1

PORT HURON, Mich. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced a toll increase for eastbound traffic on the Blue Water Bridge (BWB) in Port Huron, effective December 1, 2024. After holding rates steady for 14 years, MDOT is implementing a $1 increase across all vehicle categories. Another $1 hike is scheduled for December 1, 2025, marking a significant step to address growing costs tied to bridge maintenance, operations, and plaza improvements.

Starting next month, passenger cars will pay $4 per trip, while each additional axle for vehicles like trucks and buses will incur $4 per axle. Commercial vehicles will see a slightly higher rate of $4.25 per axle. Commuters using the EDGE Pass will continue to enjoy a $0.50 discount per crossing, providing some relief for frequent users. Despite not being legally obligated to do so, MDOT conducted a public survey before finalizing the rate changes, citing strong feedback as part of its decision-making process. The rate adjustment aims to offset increased operational expenses and fund critical infrastructure projects at the BWB, one of Michigan’s busiest international crossings. MDOT officials have highlighted the growing need for maintenance and upgrades to keep the bridge safe and efficient for travelers and freight. The decision follows public consultation efforts, with MDOT emphasizing transparency throughout the process.

The eastbound span, connecting Port Huron, Michigan, to Sarina, Ontario, is a vital route for daily commuters and commercial vehicles. The bridge plays a crucial role in facilitating trade and travel between the U.S. and Canada. The toll increase is expected to generate funds to ensure the bridge’s long-term functionality while minimizing delays caused by aging infrastructure.

To further assist frequent users, MDOT encourages drivers to explore the EDGE Pass, which offers discounted rates and convenience for commuter and commercial vehicles. For inquiries, drivers can contact MDOT-BWB-CustomerCare@Michigan.gov.
