Neil MacKinnon, Ph.D., Appointed 16th President of Central Michigan University

The Board of Trustees unanimously selects an experienced academic leader to guide CMU’s future, focusing on student success and institutional growth.

Central Michigan University (CMU) has announced the appointment of Neil MacKinnon, Ph.D., as its 16th president, following a unanimous vote by the CMU Board of Trustees. MacKinnon, who will assume his role on November 1, 2024, brings over 25 years of experience in higher education leadership, most recently serving as provost at Augusta University in Georgia.

A Visionary Leader for CMU

CMU Board of Trustees Chair Todd J. Regis praised MacKinnon’s strategic vision and commitment to the university’s mission, noting his alignment with CMU’s core values. “Neil MacKinnon was an engaged candidate who offered thoughts on our future, including increased enrollment and dynamic classrooms that educate for the future careers students want to pursue,” Regis said.

MacKinnon’s background in academic leadership, particularly in overseeing medical and healthcare programs, positions him as a strong fit for CMU, which continues to expand its programs in these areas. Vice Chair Denise Williams Mallett, who led the presidential search advisory committee, highlighted his ability to foster collaboration and engage with diverse stakeholders across the university community.

A Focus on Student Success

MacKinnon admired CMU’s mission and its focus on student and graduate success. “CMU’s mission statement is very different from those at most universities,” MacKinnon said. “CMU said it will define its success by the success of its students and graduates, and by its impact on the communities it serves — that’s a powerful commitment.”

At Augusta University, MacKinnon led several key initiatives, including enrollment growth, strategic planning, and student success programs. His role encompassed academic affairs, student services, and strategic planning, giving him extensive experience in areas crucial to CMU’s future.

Academic and Leadership Credentials

MacKinnon earned his doctoral degree in the philosophy of pharmacy health care administration from the University of Florida and holds a master’s degree in hospital pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, MacKinnon earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Dalhousie University.

MacKinnon will move to Mount Pleasant this fall with his wife, Leanne, and their dog, Bentley. Their three daughters are currently attending the University of Georgia.
