Michigan Residents to See 2.5% Social Security Benefit Increase in 2025

Social Security COLA

Social Security beneficiaries and SSI recipients in Michigan will receive a 2.5% increase in 2025, providing a modest bump in benefits amid easing inflation pressures.

Social Security 2025 Increase to Benefit Millions Across Michigan

Starting in 2025, more than 72.5 million Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Michiganders, will see a 2.5% increase in their Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. The average Social Security retirement beneficiary will receive an additional $50 per month, with payments beginning in January. For those relying solely on SSI, increased payments will start arriving on December 31, 2024.

This cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) marks a decrease from 2024’s 3.2% bump and closely matches the 10-year average COLA increase of 2.6%. According to Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security, the adjustment will “help millions keep up with expenses even as inflation has started to cool.”

Michigan Seniors and Low-Income Families Gain Modest Relief

In Michigan, where rising living costs have impacted seniors, retirees, and low-income households, the 2.5% adjustment offers a much-needed financial buffer. With the state’s population aging and many residents relying on fixed incomes, the increase can help offset everyday expenses such as groceries, utilities, and healthcare.

For residents like Betty Thompson of Grand Rapids, who depends on Social Security to make ends meet, even a modest increase can make a difference. “Every extra dollar helps when prices keep going up,” Thompson said. However, some seniors worry it won’t be enough to cover the rising cost of healthcare and other essential needs.

Wage-Based Tax Adjustments May Impact Working Michiganders

In addition to benefit increases, the maximum taxable earnings subject to Social Security taxes will rise from $168,600 to $176,100 in January 2025. This adjustment, tied to average wage growth, means higher-income Michiganders will contribute more into the Social Security system.

The COLA is determined by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), calculated by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, to ensure benefits align with inflationary trends. While this formula has helped beneficiaries keep pace with cost increases, many advocates argue that rising medical and housing costs still strain fixed incomes.

New, Easier-to-Understand COLA Notices for Beneficiaries

Social Security recipients will be notified of their new benefit amounts via redesigned COLA notices this year, using clearer language and providing personalized details. For Michiganders with my Social Security online accounts, notices will be available starting in late November. Traditional mail notices will follow in December.
