MDOT announces that most of Michigan’s 77 rest areas will remain open this winter, providing convenience and safety for drivers.
MDOT Maintains Open Access to Rest Areas Despite Winter
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will keep the majority of its 77 rest areas open during the winter months, maintaining essential stops for drivers throughout the state. However, five rest areas will close from December 2, 2024, to April 14, 2025, due to safety considerations and reduced winter usage.
Gregg Brunner, MDOT Chief Operations Officer, emphasized the importance of these stops for travelers’ safety and convenience. “Many travelers look to our network of rest areas for a safe stopping point on their travels, which is why we keep as many open as possible year-round,” Brunner said.
Five Rest Areas to Close Temporarily for Winter
The five seasonal closures are necessary due to hazardous conditions, including icy drives and potentially slippery stairways. The affected rest areas include:
- St. Ignace Rest Area (southbound I-75, Mackinac County)
- Ludington Rest Area (northbound US-31, Mason County)
- Topinabee Rest Area (northbound I-75, Cheboygan County)
- Hebron Rest Area (southbound I-75, Cheboygan County)
- Hart Rest Area (southbound US-31, Oceana County)
During the closure period, these rest areas will be winterized, with entrances and exits barricaded and “Closed Until Spring” signs posted. Signs will also direct motorists to the nearest open rest area, with details available on MDOT’s website at www.Michigan.gov/RestAreas.
Ensuring Safety and Accessibility for Motorists
MDOT’s decision to keep most rest areas open throughout winter highlights the department’s focus on traveler safety and convenience. Rest areas play a vital role for drivers needing a break, providing not only restrooms but a place to stretch and regain focus during long journeys, especially amid Michigan’s challenging winter weather.
