Controversy ignites as U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers struggles to distance himself from Betsy DeVos, a top donor and champion of defunding public education.

DeVos Connection Looms Large Over Rogers’ Campaign

LANSING, Mich. — Republican Senate hopeful Mike Rogers found himself on the defensive during a recent debate after his financial ties to Betsy DeVos—the controversial former U.S. Secretary of Education—were raised by Democratic opponent Elissa Slotkin. Rogers denied the relevance of DeVos to his education platform, sparking backlash for what critics call an effort to rewrite his campaign’s narrative.

Betsy DeVos? I’m not sure how that has anything to do with us trying to improve education for our kids,” Rogers said, visibly frustrated when Slotkin highlighted DeVos as a major campaign donor.

DeVos, an advocate for dismantling public education systems and promoting privatization, is notorious for stating that the U.S. Department of Education “should not exist.” Despite Rogers’ attempt to sideline her influence, public records confirm that DeVos and her family have donated the maximum legal amount to Rogers’ Senate campaign—contributions totaling at least $46,200 from multiple DeVos family members.

Slotkin Presses Rogers on Policy Alignment With DeVos

Slotkin didn’t let the issue drop, questioning what favors DeVos might expect from Rogers if he wins the Senate race. “It’s clear what Betsy DeVos stands for—defunding public schools and undermining public educators,” Slotkin said. “Her whole family has backed Rogers’ campaign. That tells you all you need to know about whose agenda he’s aligned with.”

DeVos’ legacy as Secretary of Education, including her support for voucher programs that divert funds from public schools, has long made her a polarizing figure in Michigan. Rogers, who has previously supported DeVos-backed policies, continues to advocate for tax incentives and vouchers that critics say benefit wealthier communities at the expense of public school systems.

In August, Rogers appeared at a campaign event with DeVos, reaffirming their shared priorities. His stance has drawn scrutiny, given polls showing that only 8% of Michiganders view DeVos favorably, with 50% expressing unfavorable opinions.

Rogers Faces Growing Scrutiny Amid Tight Senate Race

Rogers’ reluctance to address his ties to DeVos underscores the challenges facing his campaign as it navigates a contentious race against Slotkin. The debate highlighted ongoing tension between public education advocates and political figures supporting privatization efforts. Rogers has backed voucher programs linked to DeVos, prompting speculation about whether he would push similar policies in the Senate.

While Rogers dismissed Slotkin’s attacks as a distraction, Slotkin framed the debate as a referendum on public education in Michigan. “I believe in strong public schools,” Slotkin said. “Rogers stands with those who want to dismantle them.”
