Austin M. Olson, a 27-year-old from Westland, Michigan, was arrested by the United States Capitol Police (USCP) on November 5 after attempting to enter the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) armed with a flare gun, a torch lighter, and bottles of fuel. Olson’s arrest occurred during routine screening when USCP officers discovered suspicious items on the x-ray and, upon further inspection, noted a strong smell of fuel on Olson’s clothing.

Further searches revealed a manifesto and a letter addressed to Congress, reportedly discussing Olson’s views on the Middle East conflict. This discovery prompted Capitol Police to shut down the CVC and suspend public tours for the rest of the day, ensuring the safety of visitors and employees.

Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger praised the officers’ vigilance, stating, “If our officers did not stop this man, yesterday would have been a very different story than this one. All of our employees continue to work, together, around the clock during this heightened security environment.”

Motives Under Investigation; Links to Michigan Explored

USCP investigators are probing Olson’s motives and his journey from Michigan to Washington, D.C., on November 4. After detaining Olson, the authorities tracked down and secured his sedan, parked at 9th Street and Maryland Avenue, NE. The USCP K9 Unit and the Hazardous Incident Response Division cleared the vehicle, finding no immediate threats.

Authorities are currently piecing together Olson’s intentions, considering his possession of incendiary materials and written messages aimed at lawmakers. Charges include Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Unlawful Activities, and Disorderly Conduct.

Heightened Security Concerns at Capitol Complex

This arrest comes during a period of heightened security around the Capitol, with law enforcement agencies on high alert for potential threats. Olson’s actions and arsenal underscore concerns about public safety and the ongoing challenges of securing government buildings. The collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department was instrumental in ensuring a swift response and containment of any potential threat.
