The crash unfolded when a 34-year-old Crystal man driving southbound in a tractor-trailer lost control. The vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, colliding with a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer driven by the Sebewaing man.
The force of the collision left the Blazer’s driver critically injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained only minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.
Multiple agencies responded, including Sebewaing Police and Fire Departments, Unionville Fire Department, and towing services from D&J Towing and Bartnik Towing. The Michigan State Police Third District Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation to determine the precise sequence of events.
“The combination of icy roads and high winds creates extremely hazardous driving conditions,” said officials from the Michigan State Police. “We urge drivers to use caution in such weather.”
Preliminary findings suggest no involvement of alcohol or drugs in the crash. Authorities are focusing on environmental conditions, including the icy surface and strong winds, which likely contributed to the tractor-trailer’s loss of control.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of Michigan’s winter weather. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution during hazardous conditions by reducing speed, maintaining safe distances, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready.
