Nationwide Shift to Appointments Aims to Improve Service

By January 6, 2025, nearly all services at local offices will require a scheduled appointment. The transition builds on the success of this model in nearly 400 offices already, which have reported shorter wait times and a streamlined visitor experience.

SSA officials emphasized that the change will not exclude vulnerable populations or those needing urgent assistance, who may still access walk-in services.

Transition Timeline: Two Phases

The rollout consists of two phases:

  • Phase 1 (Now – January 5, 2025): A transition period to inform clients about the new system. Customers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with appointment scheduling and SSA’s online and automated service options.
  • Phase 2 (Effective January 6, 2025): Nationwide implementation requiring appointments for most in-person services, including Social Security card requests.

Customers can use the SSA’s online services at www.ssa.gov/onlineservices or access automated telephone services via the National 800# at 1-800-772-1213. Local office numbers can be found at secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp.

Some offices with minimal wait times will also continue to accommodate walk-ins.
