Beachside Camping At Port Crescent State Park

Port Crescent State Park Renovation – Campground Closed For 2024 Season

PORT AUSTIN, MI — Amid the tranquil shores of Lake Huron, at the very tip of Michigan’s thumb, Port Crescent State Park is embarking on an ambitious transformation. The famed campground, a staple for nature enthusiasts and star gazers, will close its gates for the 2024 season for the Port Crescent State Park renovation. However, this temporary pause heralds a promise of rejuvenation, thanks to a $3.25 million upgrade project, part of the state’s Building Michigan Together Plan.

A Campground Reimagined

The changes occurring at Port Crescent’s campground are not merely cosmetic. Visitors can anticipate a renewed space where nature meets modern convenience. The upgrades include new roads, enhanced water and sewer systems, and a state-of-the-art sanitation station. Campers will be greeted by 12 full hook-up sites, newly numbered for ease, additional parking spaces, and improved drainage systems. This overhaul is a nod to the importance of tourism to Michigan and its commitment to preserving and enhancing its natural treasures. Sadly, you’ll need to pitch your tents elsewhere for those planning to camp under the stars this 2024 season.

Beach House: A Summer Delight Reborn

As the campground transforms, the beach house, too, is receiving a much-deserved facelift. Scheduled to reopen by Memorial Day, the new beach house will feature a modern metal roof, innovative soffits to deter nesting birds, and a fully accessible ADA family bathroom. The men’s and women’s restrooms will be completely renovated, ensuring a comfortable and refreshing experience for all beach-goers.

Funding and Future Vision

This extensive renovation is fueled by a significant injection of $4.95 million in federal relief funds. That’s your federal relief funds hard at work, ensuring your favorite park stays top-notch. This investment underscores a broader initiative to enhance Michigan’s natural and recreational resources, ensuring they remain vibrant and accessible for future generations.

Beyond the Construction SiteWhat Can You Still Enjoy?

Though the campground’s closure might disappoint some, the park’s day-use area remains a beacon for outdoor activities. Port Crescent State Park, sprawling over 640 acres, continues to offer its sandy beaches, a dark sky preserve for the astronomers at heart, and a myriad of trails for the adventurous souls. The Pinnebog River calls to canoeists and kayakers, while the abundant natural landscape provides a haven for bird watchers and hunters alike.

Bummer for Camping This Summer….But

So, while your camping plans might be on hold, Port Crescent State Park is gearing up to welcome you back with open arms and upgraded facilities. Think of it as a short break for a long-term gain. This project enhances the park’s facilities and reaffirms Michigan’s commitment to preserving such spaces. The temporary closure of the campground is a small price to pay for the enduring beauty and improved accessibility that await us in the seasons to come.
