A town at a railroad crossing

The Wabash and Pere Marquette railroads connected Romulus with other Michigan communities. Depot and interlocking-tower views show the facilities needed to handle the crossing. Nearby businesses served residents and the farms that surrounded the town.

The McBride Block advertised hardware and agricultural equipment. Seestedt's Foundry adds industrial work to a history often associated with farming. School and church photographs show the institutions used by families whose lives were shaped by that local economy.

The arrival of aviation

Wayne County began building its airport near Middlebelt and Wick roads in 1929, and the airport opened Sept. 4, 1930. Military use during World War II brought another phase of development at Romulus Army Air Field. Later expansion made the airport a major transportation center while the historic photographs preserved the older railroad town.
