When Waterford Harvested Winter – People’s Ice on Huntoon Lake

A vintage view of People’s Ice Co. on Huntoon Lake shows how big the “ice business” once got in Waterford — harvesting and storing winter ice to keep Michigan cool long before refrigerators took over.
People's Ice Co.'s Plant - Huntoon Lake

Two massive wooden buildings rise on the shore of Huntoon Lake in Waterford, labeled as People’s Ice Co.’s icehouse and plant. Before home refrigerators were common, ice companies cut winter ice from lakes, stored it in huge insulated houses, and supplied homes and businesses through the warm months. In Waterford, local history notes Peoples Ice Company of Detroit was buying lakefront land for an icehouse as early as 1905 — a reminder that these lakes were part of a real cold-storage supply chain.

Do you remember ice delivery, icehouses, or stories about harvesting lake ice in Oakland County?
