CAFO, or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation, refers to large-scale industrial farming facilities where animals are raised in confined spaces to maximize production efficiency. These operations house hundreds or thousands of animals, such as cattle, pigs, or poultry, often under conditions that prioritize productivity over animal welfare. CAFOs are significant contributors to environmental challenges, including water pollution from manure runoff, greenhouse gas emissions, and antibiotic resistance due to heavy antibiotic use in livestock.
In only a few short years, Huron County Michigan went from a sleepy rural county internationally known for its navy beans and sugar beets to the premier wind energy and animal product producer in Michigan.
