Lake Superior’s Angry Weather – 40-Knot Winds Due Across Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula

Lake Superior weather

Westerly gales up to 40 knots are expected on Lake Superior today. The National Weather Service warns of strong winds and rain across Upper Michigan.

Winds Up to 40 Knots Expected Amid Cold Front Passage

[MARQUETTE, MI] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:19 AM EST on November 17, 2024.

A strong cold front moving into Upper Michigan today will bring westerly gales up to 40 knots across the western half of Lake Superior. This hazardous weather event is expected to intensify throughout the day, creating potentially dangerous conditions for mariners and residents in the area.

Powerful Gales and Rain Expected on Lake Superior

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts that the westerly gales of 35-40 knots will start developing late this morning as the cold front moves eastward. These high winds will persist into the evening, impacting boating and shorelines in Upper Michigan’s western region. Residents and boaters are urged to take immediate precautions due to these challenging weather conditions.

Cloud Cover and Drizzle to Precede Heavy Rainfall

Starting late tonight, cloud cover will increase as a precursor to light rain showers moving into the area. Although precipitation levels are expected to be moderate, with maximum accumulations of up to 0.30 inches in some areas, isolated thunderstorms may be heard, especially over the western U.P.. This rain is part of the broader system moving from the Dakotas.

Winds to Shift Behind Cold Front, Bringing Cooler Air

Once the cold front passes through, winds will turn from southeast to southwest and west, with gusts anticipated to reach up to 30 mph overnight. This pattern marks the arrival of cooler and drier air across Upper Michigan, easing the high wind conditions by early Monday morning.

More Rain and Potential Gales Early Next Week

Another significant storm system will approach Upper Michigan on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing additional rounds of rain and potentially strong winds. This period may see sustained winds of 35 knots or higher, depending on the system’s track.

Today’s Forecast: Expect Cloudy Skies with Cooler Temperatures

Cloudy conditions will dominate today, with temperatures ranging from the mid to upper 40s. As the cold front approaches, expect a few spots near the Great Lakes to hit around 50 degrees. Scattered showers will transition into heavier rain by late evening.
