Governor Whitmer unveils over 300 locations offering free contraception resources, including emergency contraception and family planning support.

300 Sites Across Michigan Now Offer Free Contraception Resources

In a significant move to support reproductive health, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the expansion of the Take Control of Your Birth Control program, making free contraception available at more than 300 locations across Michigan. This initiative aims to empower Michiganders with increased access to birth control and essential family planning resources, regardless of insurance coverage.

Participating locations range from community partners and local health departments to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) offices and federally qualified health centers, ensuring availability across every county in the state. Residents can explore an online interactive map at michigan.gov/takecontrol to identify nearby providers and learn about available resources, including condoms, emergency contraception, and over-the-counter oral contraceptives.

Whitmer Advocates for Reproductive Health Autonomy

Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of the initiative in supporting individual freedom over reproductive health decisions. “Decisions about reproductive health care should be between a woman, her doctor, and her trusted community,” Whitmer stated. “With free contraception available at more than 300 locations, we’re taking bold steps to support the health and future of all Michiganders.”

Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive, highlighted the equity-driven focus of the program, noting that the goal is to make essential health tools accessible to all. “We appreciate the organizations stepping up to ensure that individuals can obtain the contraception and resources they need,” Dr. Bagdasarian said.

Comprehensive Support Through Insurance and Medicaid Programs

The initiative also aims to educate Michiganders on how to access contraception through insurance or Medicaid coverage. Individuals without insurance are provided with guidance to apply for Medicaid and Plan First!, a program offering family planning services for eligible residents.

Launched in 2023, Plan First! extends Medicaid benefits to cover family planning services for those who do not qualify for traditional Medicaid. This benefit is available to Michigan residents who meet specific income requirements, providing services such as birth control, STI testing, and treatment. More information on the program can be found at Michigan.gov/planfirst.

Ongoing Efforts and Broader Reproductive Freedom Actions

Governor Whitmer’s announcement builds on her administration’s commitment to safeguarding reproductive freedom in Michigan. Since 2022, Whitmer has championed various legislative and executive actions, including repealing the state’s 1931 abortion ban, enacting laws against discrimination related to abortion, and signing the Reproductive Health Act to enhance access to care and protect health care workers.

The initiative comes at a time when the reproductive rights landscape remains a contentious and evolving issue nationwide. With Michigan’s proactive measures, Whitmer is positioning the state as a leader in reproductive health autonomy and access.
