Isaac Sissel, 25, faces federal charges after allegedly threatening a violent attack tied to election results, citing stolen firearm possession.

FBI Arrests Ann Arbor Resident Over Election-Related Threats

Isaac Sissel, a 25-year-old Ann Arbor resident, was charged Tuesday with sending a threatening communication, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison. The federal charges stem from an online message submitted to the FBI National Threat Operations Center on November 2, 2024, in which Sissel allegedly threatened violence if former President Donald Trump won the presidential election.

The threatening communication, described in court records, contained menacing language toward “conservative Christian” individuals and referenced the possession of a stolen AR-15 firearm. “I shall carry out an attack…if Trump wins the election,” the message reportedly read. Sissel’s alleged intention to keep specific details hidden was perceived as a deliberate effort to avoid law enforcement detection.

Sissel was arrested early Tuesday by FBI agents and is expected to appear in federal court later today.

Justice Department’s Task Force Focuses on Election-Related Threats

This case falls under the purview of the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force, which was established in 2021 by Attorney General Merrick B. Garland to address escalating threats of violence against election workers and participants. Since its creation, the task force has collaborated with state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute individuals who pose credible threats.

The task force aims to ensure the safety and security of the nation’s electoral process, a priority that remains urgent amid heightened political tensions. U.S. Attorney Ison underscored the importance of protecting individuals engaged in the electoral system from intimidation and violence.

Growing Concerns Over Election Safety and Violent Rhetoric

Sissel’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement as they seek to maintain public trust and safety during politically charged times. Election-related threats have been a focal point of federal investigations, particularly in recent years as online rhetoric has intensified.

Local residents in Ann Arbor and beyond have expressed concern over the potential for violence stemming from political disputes. The FBI, through its Detroit Field Office, continues to work on addressing credible threats and encourages the public to report suspicious activity.

To report suspected threats, individuals can contact their local FBI office or submit a complaint online. If immediate danger is perceived, contacting 911 remains the advised course of action.

Related Developments in National Security and Online Threats

The proliferation of online threats tied to political and social issues has forced law enforcement agencies nationwide to adopt a proactive stance. Task forces like the Election Threats Task Force reflect a broader commitment by the Justice Department to mitigate risks and prevent potential violence.
