The Thumbs First Festival Of the Season
The festival, running from 10 am to 4 pm, is a treasure chest of activities designed for all ages. The gazebo will be the heart of the festival, featuring live music that provides a lively soundtrack to a day filled with nature and community. Culinary delights await as board members grill up local favorites—hot dogs and hamburgers—complemented by a selection of homemade baked goods. It’s a chance to savor local flavors while browsing the stalls of local artisans and vendors who bring a creative flair to the festival with handmade crafts and unique items for sale.
For our younger guests, the festival continues its cherished tradition of tree-cookie painting. These slices of tree branches serve as both a canvas for young artists and a means of interacting with nature in a hands-on way. In previous years, these painted tree cookies have also been used as creative tools to count and track the number of Lady’s Slippers sighted on nature walks.

At the Visitor’s Center, located at 3336 Loosemore Road, the day offers more than just entertainment. It is an educational experience where visitors can meet Collin, our Blanding’s turtle, who resides in a specially designed spacious tank. Interactive displays, such as the vernal pool and native bird exhibits, provide insights into local ecosystems and conservation efforts. A stroll through the wildlife area reveals bird feeders and waterfall features, creating a serene environment that supports local fauna.
The trails at the Nature Center are another highlight. With nearly six miles of paths winding through an 80-year-protected forest, they offer a gateway to discovering Michigan’s diverse ecosystems. These trails include a short paved loop, ensuring accessibility for all visitors, making it an inclusive way to explore the wilderness and possibly spot the iconic Pink Lady’s Slipper orchid.
