ThumbWind: The Big Storm of August 2nd 2015

It isn’t very often that the Thumb region gets a huge weather event. But when it does it certainly wakes people up on just our fragile our existence can be.

In the mid afternoon of Sunday August 2nd, the thumb experienced tropical storm force winds, two observed tornadoes, property damage and power is still out to thousands of residents in the region as this is being posted.

The pictures below reflect the leading edge of the first wave of storms that hit along the Upper Thumb coastline. Taken near Oak Beach, we saw flying tree branches and debris immediately as the winds hit shore. PWCs struggled to anchored along the shore, folks enjoying a Sunday afternoon at Oak Beach County Park were drenched by horizontal winds that drove rain and pea sized hail into the pavilion area. We had to stop and ride out the first part of the storm as we didn’t want to get hit by tree branches.

  1. Amazing photos!
It was an incredible series of storms up north also. I happened to be in the UP with my daughter, returning home on the bridge when the trailers attached to two other vehicles flipped over due to the ferocious winds. I think it was the only time in my life I’ve ever been frightened driving the Mighty Mac.
